Learning how to swim as an adult can be a daunting task, especially for those who have had traumatic experiences in the water or believe they are incapable of floating. However, with the right mindset and techniques, anyone can become a confident swimmer. In this blog article, we will explore the two main types of adult learners and provide tips on how to overcome fear and self-limiting beliefs in swimming.
The first step for adult learners is to become comfortable with breathing in the water. It is important to understand that you have control over your own breath. You can decide when to inhale, exhale, and hold your breath, as well as whether to breathe through your nose or mouth. To improve your understanding of breathing techniques, I recommend looking up breathing exercises on YouTube and practicing them outside of the water. This will help you become more conscious of your breath and its magical effects. I have created videos on YouTube that demonstrate simple exercises to assist beginners and those who doubt their abilities in gaining confidence and control in the water. You can find these videos at www.youtube.com/@sharsksmermaids739.

For those adult learners who struggle with self-limiting beliefs, such as the fear of opening their eyes or putting their head underwater, it is important to challenge these beliefs. Remember, you can do the things you think you can do and cannot do the things you think you can't. Start by believing in yourself and breaking free from the cemented ideas about your abilities. Tell yourself, out loud, "I am strong! I can do X activity! I can float! I can open my eyes in the water! I can go underwater with ease! I am a strong swimmer! I can do it! I can relax and float! I feel comfortable in the water!" Repeat these affirmations throughout the day and notice how it becomes easier when you practice in the water.
Now, for those who genuinely believe they cannot float, it is time to change that belief. First, tell yourself that you can float. Secondly, focus on your ability to relax and quiet your mind. Many people think they are relaxed, but their muscles tell a different story. To successfully float, you need to be completely relaxed. Here are some tips to help you float:
1. Relax your body: Release any tension in your muscles and let go of any fear or anxiety.
2. Control your breathing: Take slow, deep breaths and focus on your breath as you relax.
3. Find your buoyancy: Experiment with different body positions and movements to find the most comfortable and buoyant position for you.
4. Trust the water: Remember that water naturally supports your body and allows you to float.
By challenging your self-limiting beliefs and practicing relaxation techniques, you can overcome your fear and become a confident swimmer. Remember, learning to swim as an adult is a journey, and it is important to be patient and kind to yourself throughout the process. With dedication and perseverance, you will soon discover the joy and freedom that swimming can bring.
